Complacent Attitude About Calcium Raises Risk of Osteoporosis New Survey Reveals Women Need to Take Action

NEW YORK, NY (September 24, 2003) – New research suggests that although women know that calcium is important to their health, they often don't take the bone-strengthening steps necessary to protect themselves from osteoporosis. According to the National Calcium IQ Survey, a telephone survey of 1,000 women ages 30-60, sponsored by the National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC), most women (64%) understand that calcium plays an important role in their health. However, more than half of the women surveyed (53%) did not know how much they need, and suspect that they are not getting enough. They are right.

Some ten million women are suffering from osteoporosis, although it is preventable, and 50 percent of women will develop the debilitating bone deterioration that is symptomatic of the disease. It has been almost a decade since the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommended an optimal calcium intake of 1,200-1,500 milligrams (mg) of calcium per day, yet one third of women (32%) still fail to take the key preventative measure known to ward off the disease.

Why Aren't Women More Proactive?

"A 'me last' attitude seems to hold women back from taking better care of themselves," explains Miriam Nelson, PhD, nutritionist and fitness expert, whose best-selling Strong Women book series is based on the healthy-aging strategies of midlife and older adults. "Women who overcome a mindset that dismisses their needs as secondary can do a great deal to prevent this painful and all too common disease" says Dr. Nelson. "All it takes is a daily dose of good nutrition and exercise. Even diet-conscious calorie counters have no excuse. There is a highly digestible calorie-free calcium known as calcium citrate that can be taken between meals to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and enhance bone health."

Elizabeth Battaglino, RN, Director of Marketing and Consumer Affairs for the NWHRC, agrees.

"Women can maintain their bone health, and the earlier they start the better," says Battaglino. "The survey shows that many women are calcium conscious, but the overwhelmingly high incidence of osteoporosis proves that most of us don't get enough calcium every day. Realistically, few women will change their eating habits so they can get the NIH daily optimum calcium levels from food alone. We need to get smarter about taking calcium supplements regularly."

Supplementing the Doctor's Advice

According to the National Calcium IQ Survey, 38 percent of women take calcium supplements every day, an encouraging sign of calcium awareness. "However, understanding the different supplements and choosing the best calcium can be confusing for many women, especially since all supplements do not offer the same benefits," says Dr. Nelson. "Most calcium supplements contain calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, or calcium phosphate all of which are very different and do not offer the same benefits. For "power women" on the go, calcium citrate, such as Citracal, is the ideal option. It is highly soluble, extremely well absorbed and can be taken with or without food. What's more, Citracal does not generally cause gas or bloating, one of the primary reasons women stop taking them."

Women Aren't Getting Tested

While an overwhelming majority of those surveyed (90%) know that a bone mineral density test is the best way to detect osteoporosis, almost half of women age 51 and older have never had one. That is why it is more important than ever that women have access to better information so they can take control of their own health care and start making more educated choices about their health.
